Coney is the first female coach enshrined into the Hall of Fame.
Columbus, Ohio — The Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (OSSCA), is proud to announce the selection of long-time Chippewa Girls’ Soccer Head Coach, Ruth Coney, into the OSSCA Hall of Fame.
Coney is a former Kim Mahoney Award Winner (2007). The Kim Mahoney Award is highest honor given to a coach of a female team by the OSSCA. She is a former regional and state coach of the year (2005). She has been honored by the Greater Akron Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association as their district coach of the year seven times. She has been named league coach of the year 15 times.
On the field, Coney is currently completing her 27th season as Head Coach and earned her 400th win earlier this season. Her career record is 408-63-46. Her team finished as State Runner-Up in 2005 and 2015. During her tenure at Chippewa, she has captured 21 league titles, 12 District Championships, and has been to four OHSAA Final Fours.
The Elmira, New York native has produced 22 All-Ohioans and four All-Americans. Coney, a graduate of State University of New York, has spent her entire career as a high school teacher. She holds two Masters of Education degrees, the first from Waldon University (Educational Science) and the second from the American College of Education (Educational Leadership).
Not only has Coney been a successful coach, but has been a servant to high school soccer as well. Coney served as President of the GASSCA for nearly 15 years, and still serves as a divisional vice-president.
Coney is married to her husband Russ and has two sons, Michael and Mark.
Coney will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame at the OSSCA yearly banquet in Columbus, on January 7th.
